What is “Left”, what is “Right”? 🪞
——由 Flora 在 1Y+5M+3D 学会分辨左右而引发的严肃物理探究 — a serious physics inquiry inspired by Flora learning left from right at 1Y+5M+3D
Flora recently learned to tell her left hand from her right — congratulations! 🎉 But a question follows: what do “left” and “right” actually mean? It sounds like a childish question, yet it stumped physicists for generations — a rigorous answer only arrived in 1957.
Why is “left/right” so hard to define?
Try a thought experiment: you can only communicate with an alien on a distant planet by radio — no meetings, no photos, no objects can be exchanged. Can you teach them what “left” and “right” mean?
Every everyday trick fails:
- “心脏在左边”——可“左边”这个词正是要定义的对象,循环论证了; “The heart is on the left” — but “left” is exactly the word you're trying to define;
- “太阳从东边升起”——“上”可以用重力定义,但“东”需要指定地球自转的指向,而自转方向的约定(右手定则)本身就偷偷用到了左右; “The Sun rises in the east” — “up” comes from gravity, but “east” needs the Earth's rotation direction, and the right-hand-rule convention for rotation already smuggles in left/right;
“Like a clock's hands” — a clock is itself a man-made chiral object, and the alien has no clocks.
This puzzle has a name in the history of science: the Ozma Problem (after the fictional planet Ozma), seriously debated by physicists in the 1950s–60s. Its core is:
The mirror world used to be perfectly symmetric
Physics calls “looking in the mirror” the parity transformation (P): all spatial coordinates flip sign (x, y, z → −x, −y, −z), as if the whole universe stepped into a mirror. A law unchanged by this flip is said to conserve parity.
Before 1956 everyone was certain: gravity, electromagnetism and the strong interaction all conserve parity. Apples fall, charges flow and nuclei bind exactly the same in the mirror. Left and right seemed physically indistinguishable, and the Ozma Problem looked hopeless.
The turning point: the weak interaction breaks the mirror
随后,实验物理学家吴健雄带领团队完成了最著名的那个实验(1957 年): In 1956, Tsung-Dao Lee and Chen-Ning Yang pointed out that parity conservation had never been tested in the weak interaction, and proposed experiments to check it. Experimentalist Chien-Shiung Wu then led the most famous of them (1957):
Wu's experiment: cobalt-60 nuclei, aligned by a strong magnetic field at low temperature, emit β-decay electrons clearly more in one direction than the other.
The result shocked the physics world: the electrons did not fly out symmetrically — they strongly preferred the direction opposite to the nuclear spin. The mirror universe would not behave this way: mirrored, the preferred direction flips, yet real nature picks just one. In other words, the weak interaction violates parity — nature itself, at the level of fundamental particles, really can tell left from right!
Defining left/right for the alien, rigorously: the full protocol
Back to the Ozma Problem. With parity violation, we can teach the alien left/right over radio, step by step — every step uses only physics, never smuggling in “left/right” itself:
Prepare the source. Ask the alien to cool a cobalt-60 sample near absolute zero inside the magnetic field of a current-carrying coil, aligning the nuclei with the field.
Observe the asymmetry. Count the β-decay electrons. Nature's fact: significantly more electrons emerge from the end where the field points into the sample (electrons prefer the direction opposite the nuclear spin).
Define “clockwise”. Tell the alien: stand at the end where most electrons emerge and look along the coil's axis — the way the current circles is what we call “clockwise”. There is no loophole: the alien may choose the field and winding directions freely, but their correlation is fixed by nature — the mirror universe would give the opposite answer, so this definition is absolute.
至此,“左”和“右”被物理定律严谨地定义了!✨ From clockwise to left/right. The last step is easy: stand upright, turn in place clockwise — the direction you face is “right”, the other side “left”; likewise, the hand you wave while turning clockwise is your “right hand”. Left and right are now defined by the laws of physics! ✨
Bonus: neutrinos are born “left-handed”
🐌 Parity violation shows up even more vividly in neutrinos. These ghostly particles barely ever touch matter — and experiments reveal that every neutrino in the universe is “left-handed” (spin opposite to motion), while every antineutrino is “right-handed”. Left and right, in other words, are written directly into the identity cards of fundamental particles. 🐌
Final words
What Flora learned at 1Y+5M+3D took humanity the entire history of physics to truly understand: from the mirror paradox, to Lee and Yang's daring doubt, to Wu counting a slight excess of electrons in a near-absolute-zero lab. Left and right are not just directions — they are a tiny asymmetry engraved in the laws of the universe.
